For those of you who don't speak American, "commencement" is what we call a graduation ceremony.

Thank you, polona. I discovered that this usage is uncommon in many parts of the anglophone world, but it's such a rich word that I didn't want to drop it.

And thanks, p. bodhi. I was struck last weekend by the numbef of flip-flops under academic gowns. Haven't got a poem out of it yet. Yours is a good one.
