A deep and sincere bow to this poem, Bill. Such a density of feelings and ideas in few syllables!
Regretfully, nowadays, more and more people demonstrate a big skill to supress and repress facts and memories. Only the combat veterans remain with the curse of their nightmares...

I don't think remembering is quite enough. That Santayana quote is "Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it." Remembering without learning is futile.
