I'm not sure what you intended, but I got a man checking his watch by the time of the tide, or perhaps checking that the tide was on time by his watch. Either way I like it!
Since this only works insofar as it sets wheels turning in the mind of the reader, jem, I'll just say it has something (maybe everything) to do with time and tide.
