gloomy sunday
singing the blues to keep
the blues at bay

"allusion fusion." The only thing original here is the juxtaposition. Line 1, as many of you will have recognized, is the title of a Billie Holiday classic. According to legend, her recording has been found on the turntable at many suicide scenes. Lines 2-3 are a rough paraphrase of Albert Murray * on what the blues are for. Thus, a fusion of two allusions.

*Author of "South to a Very Old Place," "The Omni-Americans," and "Stomping the Blues," etc.
