behind

seen from behind
it doesn't look like much
the peacock's tail

Posted as a comment at Juliet's blog. The peacock sighting occurred at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanical Garden in Arcadia, California. You can also occasionally encounter a peacock out for a stroll around town. They are one of the town's chief attractions (well, there is the Santa Anita racetrack), but I've heard that some more recently arrived residents want to get rid of them.

the tail certainly isn't as magnificent when it's not held up in display.

Must be wonderful to just encounter a peacock wandering round town!

Thanks for the comments, Juliet. Yes, the reading in your second comment is what I had in mind. I hope that the reader's mind, on the basis of line 3, will form the image of the peacock's tail in full display – which, seen from behind, doesn't look like much. Seen from the proper angle, though . . .

By the way, although you are advised not to feed them, the peacocks, peahens, and even the chicks seem quite calm and relaxed in the company of humans. Quite a different story when we passed a goose and her goslings.

Nice!
__Here? Its turkeys! and the same applies to their 'display' tails!
__RECENTLY ARRIVED residents want to
eliminate the peacocks?
__Of course, the over-used axiom is: the forced closing of a 90 year old Hog farm because... the >NEWLY ARRIVED residents< didn't think the odor was appropriate. (They moved there, didn't they?) _m

M, a turkey's display is not quite as spectacular as a peacock's. I'm rooting for the peacocks.

__Quite true, Bill. The local (Here?) wild turkeys' mating displays, though analogous, are far from the peacocks' grand, colorful exhibits. Three cheers for the peacocks! _m

the peacock displayed is surely magnificent and the female she is left in all white, giving him all the attention

much love...

Keep the peacocks. I've seen them in the garden and at other places. They are a lovely attraction.
