counting syllables
I have seventeen of them
but they don't add up

__Bill, I think too many things in todays life... seem not to add up; cutting back might be the "edit" we need to trim back that Brussel Sprout stalk, to seventeen. __Smiles! _m

Best advice I ever received on writing haiku: Start with as many details as possible, and then cut until there is nothing left but haiku. Thanks, M.

Someone in Washington D.C. had the excellent idea of a haiku competition, the winning ku to be put on display in the Golden Triangle section of the city. Of almost a thousand entries 99 were selected. First place was taken by my dear friend Kala Ramesh of Pune, India.

You'd think this might be worthy of celebration, but The Washingtonian, a local monthly, denounced the whole thing (SCANDAL) because only 3 of the 99 were in the "required" (by The Washington) three-line 5-7-5 format.

And that's what inspired this ku.
